firefox (and others) keeps crashing

hi guys,
i have a quite annoying problem with ubunti edgy 6.10.
some programs (e.g. firefox 2.0.0.2, gaim, and so on), keep crashing randomly: some times they start crashing within minutes after startup, some other times it takes longer. if i restart them, they usually crash again after a while.

i am using gnome, and i think the problem is related to x because if i try to run firefox, for instance, from the command line, the message i get after it crashes is:

quote:
the application 'gecko' lost its connection to the display :0.0;
most likely the x server was shut down or you killed/destroyed
the application.

all this thing is quickly becoming quite annoying, since the crashes are very frequent with ff, but are starting to become an issue also with other programs.

has anyone experienced this kind of issues or have any idea about what could i do to solve them? (they began right after the upgrade to edgy, but now are happening more frequently)

i am using the latest versions of gnome, ati's fglrx driver and xorg available on edgy.

hi,

i had a similar problem after i tried to install xorg 7.2. i almost thought of re-installing edgy. but, miraculously, the only thing missing was some links to certain fonts (may be got screwed up when i tried to install xorg 7.2). the problem got corrected after rectifying it. sorry i forgot the exact solution.

hi,

check if your browsers crash only when you visit sites with flash. if so, reinstall flash.

well, the problem is the fact that is not the browser that crashes in that way: this extends also to gaim, netbeans, and many other programs...
