gone!

i've had ubuntu installed for a week now and its been doing just fine, but i turned it on today and the bars along the top and bottom of the screen have vanished. anyone know whats happened?

those are your panels. do alt+f2, type in gnome-terminal and press the run button.
when gnome-terminal is up and running, type in gnome-panel and see if there are any errors.
