hello,
my girlfriend has a laptop with ubuntu. i have xinerama setup on it using the external monitor port.
depending on the situation the laptop needs two different configurations:
1. when the laptop is at home it needs a xorg.conf setup for xinerama.
2. when the laptop is anywhere else it needs a xorg.conf for only one monitor without xinerama.
i've been trying to think of an elegant way to switch between the two configurations. i was wondering if gdm could do it somehow? obviously it would need to restart but could i add a button or such in gdm to change the file?
if not, could a little selector script written in bash or such?
any ideas, suggestions?

ubuntu 6.06 desktop guides
the desktop guides are developed by the ubuntu documentation team for each release. they aim to provide help for setting up ubuntu for common tasks and configuring the desktop.
a version of the guides exists for ubuntu, kubuntu and xubuntu, and the guides are translated to many languages.
you can find the guides:
* inside your system (go to the system help)
* on the ubuntu documentation website at http://help.ubuntu.com in html or pdf format
* on the ubuntu documentation project store at http://lulu.com/ubuntu-doc in paper form
thanks, hope they help!

hi there,
i'm having a weird problem. i just installed kubuntu 6.10 i386 with nvidia beta drivers and beryl. it all runs well, accept that windows that i close in this session will reappear after the restart. it is even worse, when i open other programs, they will also reappear.
i tried to change the setting: kcontrol -) session manager -) on login to "start with an empty session", but no luck. i ran kcontrol as sudo.
please let me know if you can help me in any way!

x server fails to start
hi all,
i am trying to get ubuntu edgy working on my system. i have installed it using the alternative cd, but when i try to boot for the first time, it fails at trying to load the x server.
i get an error message telling me that it failed to start the x server.
i have already tried booting with xforcevesa on, to no avail.
i am using an ati x1600 card, and i also have a widescreen monitor- would this cause problems?
please help!

i've been running kubuntu edgy on my hp compaq nx6325 since i bought it two months ago, and it has worked perfectly, except that last week it suddenly started locking up the keyboard at random times. the first time was after i had hibernated and resumed maybe up to ten times (i saw no reason to shut down) so i though that was the reason, but later it locked up again. one time already ad the kde login prompt, but usually after about an hour or so working.
i installed xubuntu from the repositories to see if there was any difference, but with no luck.
i am not running beryl or any other fancy things.
tried kernel 2.6.17-10 and 2.6.17-11, same result.
other interesting "features": when the keyboard locks up, the mouse keeps working and the computer seems to work fine, but when i try shutting it down (or simply logging off) it shuts down all the programs, blanks the screen and hangs, so i have to force it off with the power button.
it has never locked up outside of x - grub always works, and it works fine once restarted - for a while...
can anybody tell me how to restart the keyboard module so i can make an icon i can click to do that if the keyboard locks up? i want to see if this will help, and hopefully come closer to solving the problem.
any input will be appreciated.
