best looking window manager
i have been running ubuntu for about a month, and i am slowly getting m$ out of my system. i am trying to test and customize my desktop. if i understand correctly, gnome uses metacity by default. i tried to install beryl and was not supported by my ati card. what other window managers should i consider for my desktop. i want a smooth look, and some eye candy. any suggestions?

question about xp re-install
i am going to try to re-install xp and have ubuntu/xp dual install. my gateway came with a recovery cd instead of the microsoft commercial cd. it says on the disc that it will erase the entire hard drive. is it safe to assume that it will not be able to read and erase my ubuntu partition? i have 250gb hd with about 150gb free space. i assume it will only read the free space, but not sure about the recovery cd.

x keeps crashing
hey,
i run dapper and gnome. x keeps crashing on me when starting several applications; i try running the application, a black screen shows and it loads the login screen again [i.e. x restarts, i guess]. these include: kaffeine, wine[cfg] or any wine-related application as well as the screensaver, which i've obviously turned off. amarok runs badly:i sometimes get an error message 'cannot talk to klauncer', the media library is only filled half of the time. i have amarok set to launch at startup, and have noticed lately that it can take very long for the icon to show after logging in.
the only 'important' things i've done as of late were to install dapper updates and compile wine from source. any thoughts as to what i could have done wrong?
i should be upgrading to feisty when it comes out, but i'd still like to know what i've done wrong and how i can solve and prevent this.

ralink card and ndiswrapper
i'm under a wireless network on windows, and i wanted to get it to work in ubuntu, but since my ralink card (chipset rt61 or rt2500, i don't quiet know) doesn't run out of the box, i have to get ndiswrapper or something to get it to work. however, i don't have a ethernet connection, so to install anything, i have to go on a wild dependecies chase, and, i don't have a dvd recorder, so no massive packages offline repo for me. i'm clueless here, can someone help me out?

machine only visible locally...
hi,
title pretty much describes it.
i have a server setup, and i can ssh and view the apache2 stuff locally easily.
however, if i put in the ip address of my interent (like my id address when i get it from a webpage). it just times out. i have redirects from the router to the machine, on ports 22, 80, and 8080. now im geussing the machine must have some kind of firewall?.
it needs to allow me to ssh and use the web to it. cause im thinking about using no-ip's services to set ip up so i can monitor my server and what it's doing from uni .

restore grub after windows reinstall?
i am contimplating reinstalling xp to be able to update my bios. my motherboard went out before i installed ubuntu/kubuntu. when i got the computer back, i installed them both (dual boot) and did not reinstall xp. i had it updated before the motherboard went out and was able to update via cd at that point.my bios needs two updates that have to be performed in order and the first is exe or floppy only. i do not have a floppy drive. my concern is when windows rewrites it's master boot record to the hd, i will have to reinstall grub. is it possible to do this and keep my grub menu lists that i already have? currently kubuntu's grub menu controls the boot menu since it was installed after ubuntu. i would have to be able to use the kubuntu menu list. this scares me since i just got the 686 smp kernels for dual processors and ati 3d acceleration going. anyone have any ideas or advice?
