restore grub after windows reinstall?
i am contimplating reinstalling xp to be able to update my bios. my motherboard went out before i installed ubuntu/kubuntu. when i got the computer back, i installed them both (dual boot) and did not reinstall xp. i had it updated before the motherboard went out and was able to update via cd at that point.my bios needs two updates that have to be performed in order and the first is exe or floppy only. i do not have a floppy drive. my concern is when windows rewrites it's master boot record to the hd, i will have to reinstall grub. is it possible to do this and keep my grub menu lists that i already have? currently kubuntu's grub menu controls the boot menu since it was installed after ubuntu. i would have to be able to use the kubuntu menu list. this scares me since i just got the 686 smp kernels for dual processors and ati 3d acceleration going. anyone have any ideas or advice?

confused about driver for canon bjc250
i am using dapper drake and trying to hook up an old canon bjc250 color bubble jet printer. i have installed the driver canon-bjc-250-bjc250gs.ppd. the system did not recognize the printer and i had to manually show that it is a local printer on a parallel port. when you try to print a test page, it starts to print then hangs forever.

excuse this very noobish first post, but google didn't turn up anything. i have a gigabyte ds3 with 2x seagate 7200.10s in raid 0 running on the jmicron sata controller and a single 120 gb ide disk. windows xp and the mbr are on the raid array. what is the easiest way for me to install ubuntu? can i put it on the ide drive and then fix raid drivers and the bootloader once it is installed? what would i need to do to install on the raid array?
thanks, your help is appreciated.

all that comes up when i put the cd in, is some applications i can install.
it says "boot from this cd to try ubuntu without affecting your system"
for a start, i do not know how to do this. and if i did, i dont wanna install it as a demo. i want it instead of crappy windows!!

really low sound - realtek alc861
well when i try to play music, i put it at max volume in my music player (xmss) and it is really low. so, first i checked the system sound (the little speaker icon on my task bar near the time display). that was also pushed to the max.
after searching the forums some, i went into apps>sound and video>volume control and saw that it had the hda intel device listed. i switched it to my realtek and messed with the bars to maximize my sound. what i ended up having was slightly louder sound, but nothing really that great at all. i had to put the volume column to max, and line in column to about a third of the way up. any more on the line in and the speakers begin to sound all crackled with static.
then i went into system>preferences>sound. under default sound card, it lists hda intel, but it doesn't give me the option to switch to my realtek. any ideas on how to improve my sound output?
