really low sound - realtek alc861

well when i try to play music, i put it at max volume in my music player (xmss) and it is really low. so, first i checked the system sound (the little speaker icon on my task bar near the time display). that was also pushed to the max.

after searching the forums some, i went into apps>sound and video>volume control and saw that it had the hda intel device listed. i switched it to my realtek and messed with the bars to maximize my sound. what i ended up having was slightly louder sound, but nothing really that great at all. i had to put the volume column to max, and line in column to about a third of the way up. any more on the line in and the speakers begin to sound all crackled with static.

then i went into system>preferences>sound. under default sound card, it lists hda intel, but it doesn't give me the option to switch to my realtek. any ideas on how to improve my sound output?

dapper freezes or reboots without warning

i could use a little assistance please. my install of dapper has recently taken to either restarting the graphical interface or freezing completely, requiring a hard shutdown.

i don't even know where to look to see what is the problem; is there an equivalent of windows event viewer? how can i tell if it's x or gdm? would reinstalling the gnome-desktop meta package refresh all the files, if one's corrupt?

looking forward to hearing from anyone with a clue!

high cpu usage

everything is slow in my kubuntu installation. it works normally in kubuntu live cd and in winsux.
ksysmanager doesn't show anything consuming too much cpu. and all together should be fine too, but it isn't.

e-mailcalendaraddress book client

e-mail/calendar/address book client

so i've been using evolution mail client for a couple years with gnome. i make extensive use of the calendar, and i love the auto-completion of the address book when i'm sending e-mails. as much as i like evolution client, though, i've switched to xfce recently and am looking for something a little bit less resource intensive ... so does anyone have any recommendations for a/some program(s) to do this for me (gtk2 based)? it looks like sylpheed claws gtk2 is probably what i want for mail/address book ... but i haven't found any calendar yet. i tried orage but it doesn't have a full view, it is just a small "applet" type program where i can't view all the events and what they are for the month.

thanks for any opinions!

i screwed up my partitions

i screwed up my partitions

i was trying to remove kubuntu from a ubuntu/kubuntu dual install and deleted the extended and swap partitions for ubuntu instead of kubuntu. the kubuntu extended and swap are still there. i am using the live cd to boot from the hard drive now. i get the debian boot loader screen and can't catch everything, but see something about "trying to load pixellinux". it then goes to an edubuntu load progress screen and hangs. i have never installed edubuntu, so i guess that pic was hiding in some folder. the grub is working when i use the live cd. can i fix this screw up?
