metapackages - learning

hi, i'm a beginning user on ubuntu. i want to install educational programs on my machine. i have found and installed debianedu programs on the machine but they are metapackages. ie one for mathematics, one for physics, etc.

how do i open these / or do i have to install another program to use them ? i am lost.

for example spm : education-physics :

debianedu physics related applications
this metapackage depends on various applications that can be used to
teach physics.

spm = synaptic package manager

xorg update messes beryl

i just updated my system with latest kubuntu updates. after restarting x, beryl won't run. running "beryl-manager" or just "beryl" does the same - restart x. that's probably because updates included an xorg update.

restore grub after windows reinstall

restore grub after windows reinstall?

i am contimplating reinstalling xp to be able to update my bios. my motherboard went out before i installed ubuntu/kubuntu. when i got the computer back, i installed them both (dual boot) and did not reinstall xp. i had it updated before the motherboard went out and was able to update via cd at that point.my bios needs two updates that have to be performed in order and the first is exe or floppy only. i do not have a floppy drive. my concern is when windows rewrites it's master boot record to the hd, i will have to reinstall grub. is it possible to do this and keep my grub menu lists that i already have? currently kubuntu's grub menu controls the boot menu since it was installed after ubuntu. i would have to be able to use the kubuntu menu list. this scares me since i just got the 686 smp kernels for dual processors and ati 3d acceleration going. anyone have any ideas or advice?

poor rendering of windows fonts

poor rendering of windows fonts

after a lot of messing around i still cannot get windows fonts looking (what i consider) good on kubuntu dapper. overall the default fonts look ok in applications, but the windows fonts (installed from the msttcorefonts package) on webpages don't look quite right in multiple browsers. my main monitor is a lcd monitor connected using a dvi cable, so i need something to make fonts appear smoother otherwise they are really blocky (whereas you don't really need font smoothing with a lcd using an analogue connection).

you can see some of the problems in the attached images. in the first one the stem of the number two where it says "libcairo2-dev" almost looks like it has part of it missing, and i think the two lines coming off the upright part of the "k" on the last line look rather thin. in the second image where it says "12 2005" again i think part of the two appears to be missing. in the third image the capital bold "o" seems to be a bit furry at the top and bottom instead of being a sharp line. i'm using the default font rendering with anti-aliasing on, and using sub-pixel hinting and a hint style of full.i've tried the autohinter but that makes some bold text of windows fonts too bold.

i've tried the font patches here which i think do improve things, but still have the same problems such as part of the number two missing. if i enable the autohinter with these patches i think this gives the best font rendering and fixes the part of the "2" missing, but it brings other problems like some letters too close together and touching, or the vertical part of a capital "i" being to one side of the top and bottom parts.

i do a lot of surfing and want to use the windows fonts so i can view pages as the designer intended, but poor rendering of windows fonts is a real show stopper for me using kubuntu. i did install suse 10.1 but that had the same problems with windows fonts. i want to use kubuntu more, but having something so important not looking right is really annoying. i am used to cleartype in windows, but don't mind getting used to slightly different looking fonts if the letters are formed right (don't have bits missing etc).

so how can i improve this? do other users see these same problems? if so do you just put up with it? are other users with dvi connected lcd monitors happy with their font rendering of windows fonts, and if so how did you get good font rendering of windows fonts? thanks for any help on this issue.

now to the problem:
ever since i installed compiz / beryl the xine control menu is transparent and unusable, its drawing the buttons on it to the screen but not the background. i tryed to reinstall xine. no avail. any ideas? i have rolled out all the compiz / beryl changes. i have not removed the packages though.

internet connect is unpredictable and often doesnt work from

internet connect is unpredictable and often doesnt work from boot. help!

i've been having trouble with my internet connection ever since i installed ubuntu a few months ago. at seemingly random times, directly from reboot, my internet connection would stop working while just before rebooting is was detected and worked flawlessly.

i've tried switching between static ip and automatic detection and both work, but again, randomly. sometimes, when im really frustrated and dont want to use xp and i have time to kill, ill reboot incessantly until the internet is detected and this often works. but whats strange about this is i dont change any settings or do anything at all to fix the problem except merely rebooting.

when eth0 is not detected all i am able to see is lo, loopback.

i use a d-link wbr-2310 router and have cable internet.
